Music Magazine Evaluation

Who would be your audience for your media product?

The audience for my magazine is women aged between 16 -21 who also enjoy R & B and hip-hop. When creating my magazine I used the research collected from girls in this age group via a questionnaire. I tried to fit it to there specification as much as possible so that it would suit my target market. To enjoy this magazine you will need to have a liking of R & B music and an interest in exploring the artists that are popular at the time the magazine is published.  There are artists featured in my magazine that suit my audience and others that are new upcoming artists that have just emerged into the music world. Finding the correct target audience for my product was simple because I used an age group that suited me, so that I could relate and mould my magazine so that it would be well liked by women for 16-21.

I used a variation of questions to discover weather my target audience were impressed with the appearance and content for my magazine.

For example:

  • If you came across this cover in a shop would you feel it was attractive and unique with an appeal toward R& B lovers?

  • Do you feel the colour scheme would fit to a market of women between 16 and 21?

  • Do you feel that the women chosen for the front cover and the girls that were present on the double page of my magazine were appropriate and fitting for the genre of music I was trying to portray(R&B)?

Audience Feedback

Form the results of my 10 questions that were answered by 25 girls in my market segment. I discovered that my magazine was well received by most. The most well liked pages were the contents blur picture and the front cover. There was also agreement that my magazine had the appearance of a real music magazine in market at the moment. The content of my magazine was also commented on one girl said “I really enjoyed the article on the double page and found it entertaining and would love the next addition of the Goldslick life.”

My contents page had a highlight of the artist that would be present in the magazine if it was a real addition and also the articles that would currently be inside. People felt that the layout of this was well presented and appropriate for my audience.

From an overview of all the pages I created there was a response that the picture editing and use was correctly represented. Even thought I only used a small number of pictures in this magazine less is more in the situation. I only used a few colours; my main ones were black, bright pink, and gold. I used a questionnaire to discover the colours that my target audience would most enjoy so it was no surprise that they were well liked.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

As my magazine is centred on main stream R&B and Hip-Hop the outfits displayed on the band convey there style and fashion sense, this helps to show my target audience that they will be able to relate to the featured band. My female band will also relate to my target audience of 16-21 year old women, because my band members are also in this age group.

How did I attract my Target Audience?

I also involved other artists in my contents page which I feel will attract my target audience because they are in the same genre. When writing my magazine article and contents page I found it easy to relate it to my target audience because I enjoy R&B and am in the correct age range and am female. Therefore I chose to mention artists like Beyonce, Usher, T-Pain and The Pussycat Dolls because I felt they would be able to convince the audience to buy my magazine. I feel the presentation of my magazine will also have played a vital role in attracting my target audience for example the colour scheme and which pictures I decided to choose. My reasons behind the choice of image for the front cover were I felt that it should involve a dance theme so that at one glance the reader/audience would be aware that my magazine was R&B, Hip-Hop and Dance all together. Rihanna and the Sugababes were also mentioned on my front cover to attract my target audience.

Using Adobe Photoshop

Form the use of Adobe Photoshop in my preliminary task it helped me to be better when using the software and I quickly discovered ways to accomplish photo editing. For example on my contents page I multiplied my image and blurred each one a little more form left to right four times. I also gave the image a pink outline to make it more defined against the black background and then added some pink music notes to make it funkier. I also discovered how to change the opacity of my images so that on my double page spread the pink background is integrated in to my pictures.

DJ music magazine

On the cover the audience sees a man in his mid 30s he has a dove in his hands and is letting it go it is a low angle shot and so people are seeing him as an important figure. The background is tree trunks and is printed in black and white but the picture of him is different.

Doves are a symbol of peace so the fact that he is releasing one could be because they are trying to show him as a Jesus like person because this would tie in with the fact that the magazine says he is being “Reborn”.

The fonts are styled to attract there target audience which would be DJ’s and are quite funky.
